Johnny Campbell is a multidisciplinary Folk musician based in Yorkshire.
Describing themes of his material as ”Connection (and disconnection) to the landscape”, songs like ‘Winter Hill Trespass’ and ‘A Right to Roam’ have gained the attention of UK Folk scene, with ‘A Right to Roam’ earning the accolade of ‘One of the best Folk songs of 2022’ by Tradfolk. With press from Folk on Foot, BBC Countryfile Plodcast and BBC Radio 4’s Open Country, the Right to Roam advocate, and writer for Country Walking Magazine, Johnny’s work has touched many corners of the Folk, activist and outdoor networks.
Steeped in knowledge and storytelling of the North, Johnny’s recent unique album ‘True North’, is described as a ”Psychogeography Field Trip” (MOJO) in which Johnny field recorded traditional songs of Northern England on each of the county high points.
None other than Richard Thompson put it in his top 5 albums of the 2024 in MOJO.
Last year he became the first person to tour the Pennine Way for the 60th anniversary of the route’s inception. Collaborating with the National Trails Network, Johnny toured/walked Britain’s first long distance path, carrying a guitar, performing 17 shows in 19 days over 268 miles.
His main focus is promoting the radical history of Northern English working class struggles and celebrations in original and traditional song. Johnny’s releases are diverse, from original studio albums to traditional folk song field recordings, or his last album, a live album recorded on The Faroe Islands. From touring the UK and Europe extensively, his focus of inspiration remains firmly in the North, as his latest release, a collaborative single with a Yorkshire brass band ensemble testifies.
